For contour maps (xyz data) I always like 256 greyscaling best.  That is 8-bit
and is easiest for me to pick up on details about whatever data was greyscaled.
 Also extremely fast at formatting and display for those quick plots to check

Sounds interesting.  I would have to see that to appreciate it.

That is an excellent program.  I like the rotation scripts.  I never could get
that working directly with purely framebuffers on the console but it's output
can, or at least static plots.  I'd like to be able to do the rotational ones
to a suitable format and output that to mplayer.  That potentially could work
methinks.  Either that or just output individual jpegs of the object at
different intervals and then mencode the jpegs to a avi or mpeg or whatever. 
Quite a bit of work doing it that way but it might be worth it.

Probably.  As long as it has tv-out it should work excellent without any
adapters.

Something like that.  I am still a bit disenchanted with the way things are
nevermind any planned changes for that.  As we speak I have a new job running
and am creating a mpeg suitable for later creation of a vob to see if that
result will be suitable for burning to a DVD and then played on a standard DVD
player.  Looks to be working but it'll be a couple hours before mencoder is
finished with it.  The small sample video I created worked out quite well so
this should too.
