Hey Kenneth!

That wouldn't do me much good but considering the exchange rate, etc. it sounds
about right. Laptop memory used to cost around +twice the price of pc memory
so that is interesting to see. Also I try to avoid rebate offers. I find that
extremely annoying.

 KP> 1024/533 ddr2 desktop is $109 or so, and $79 after the mail-in
 KP> rebate.

The 1024 Crucial stuff was $110 here with Kingston being a tad cheaper. The
two 512's end up costing an extra $15 over the single 1024 but now they are a
matched pair which is what the board requires to take advantage of dual channel
so it should be worth the extra $15. I am not sure about the brands but from
what the dealer told me, he sees more burnt out Kingstons then Crucials so
there is that to consider and the savings weren't all that great so I went with
the Crucials.

It would be tough to get a true comparison given the differences in cpu's
employed between laptops and pc's. I have 133MHz so-dimm on the small board
that runs the C3 and it seems to me that it is favourably comparable to pc-133
but was a bit more money at the time.

KP> faster at the higher voltage, i guess, but like with ddr/-2 you may

That too. The a64's on the am2 sockets are all 2000MHz fsb (semprons are
1600). I think that is the same for the S939's a64's so I am not sure there is
an advantage there. Also the thickness of the core apparently has some
advantage as to performance. I believe all the S940 opterons are 1000MHz fsb.

 KP> i've read a lot
KP> of times in the past the chips are identical in the various speeds,
KP> at manufacture, just tested then labelled as suitable.

From what I see in specs there is no difference between the 2800+ and the 3000+
semprons other then price. Right now just 64-bit is what the experiment is
rather then speed so this isn't an issue at the moment. I am just looking to
keep it cheap. Beats me if anything else matters at the moment.

 MK>> We'll see when I get that far. :-)
KP> profiling doesn't make it worse afaik :)

We'll find out later.

KP> looks like you got the board from reading ahead.

Yep. Still waiting for the cpu and the second stick of ram. Maybe today but I
am guessing Monday at the soonest.

MK>> Nope. Still picking away at it. Do you mean email of the fido
 MK>> stuff?
KP> no, internet. did fido ever support that?

A few hubs do ... or did. My two points are both ftp based. 1:140/13.1 is off
the same ftp server as ttylinux/arena but I have another one pointing from NYS
(filegate.net). I prefer ftp as it is the best and I use it on a day to day
basis for other things. Personally I think it is the way to go all things
considered/

KP> i was thinking maybe the
KP> ftp by mail servers might have used it to some gain.

I would agree except I have yet to run across a suitable email server. email
doesn't matter much to me so I don't worry about it especially these days. Too
much spam.

KP> probably an adaptor for pci-e to pci/-64 should be feasible, and
KP> might be a good thing, dunno.

I doubt it. I am not worried about it. We'll see what happens but I doubt
pci-e will get any further then agp did. The only ones who seem excighted
about it are gamers and they are too fickle to ever support anything for very
long. Obviously more money then brains. ;-)

Life is good,
Maurice
