Hey Paul!

You don't have to use the same kernel version when building LFS. The last one
I built uses kv 2.6.17-rc5 and nowhere in the LFS docs does it mention that
version. It works fine. I haven't looked at a 2.4 kernel in ages now. Never
could get smp working properly with 2.4 kernels.

PR> Trinux only builds VFAT & Minix into the kernel, all other FS's

I question that these days, although with floppies you have less choice in the
matter. With a CD it isn't an issue anymore so a small heavily modularized
kernel makes less sense. For install/maintenence boot kernels I just build in
the stuff I know I'll encounter, and usually it is network chips I worry about.
The two main machines (ftp site and my workstation) are both intel pro based
(same with the 486 I need to get going again) while the neighbour's p4 is via
rhine. Also have a number of 3com pci ones as well as a few realteks.
Building all these into the kernel covers all the bases for my needs. The
rest, such as graphics and sound, I worry about once I have a bootable system
if I worry about those at all, as in the case of the ftp site. That one has
it's own kernel and it only needs to worry about networking and has it's own
speciallized kernel. I may change it in the near future when I add the
bootable ide flash disk back on there. I looked the other day and figured a
hotswappable compactflash disk will easily cover the archives for ftp and I
have a plan to tunnel any inbound from the outside world to a different
machine. What I may do is get the 486 to run the internetted ftp stuff from
flash disks and tunnel the rest (not that much just fido at the moment). The
internal LANs are already well covered and have been since forever but I'd like
to play more with netpipes, especially for installing.

Also I now have arena installed on the smp guy. Looks good so far.

PR> Couldn't boot the Knoppix CDR! That's a good test. The
PR> other box had no problem with it.

Right. Sounds like the cd-rom might be the culprit then. Thank goodness for
network installs although I seem to prefer hotswapping drives from my main
machine that already has everything ... and then some.

PR> If Knoppix is running from the CD, I can't very well tell it
PR> to copy from a different one. ;-)

Right. That is another reason knoppix doesn't appeal to me. Just load it all
to ram and liberate the cd-rom for other stuff if needed. Same with usb boots
although that isn't as big of an issue with them.

PR> <Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr> Nano is the 3rd or 4th step in my
 PR> "enhancements".

I thought e3 on ttylinux took care of that issue for you?

PR> I'm not sure if any of that got saved in any of the backups.
PR> /proc got created in the first step. No, come to think of it,
PR> I think git never looks at /proc for changes--by and large it
PR> would be a waste of time, and restoring it could be verrrrrry
 PR> messy!

I didn't mean the boot/root system's /proc but the chrooted target's /proc. I
am not sure you'll need to do that but I have run into a few situations where
it was nice to be able to test a few things before committing that enviroment
to a bootable disk, especially to a hotswapped drive that will be booted on a
different machine then where it was installed from.

PR> But now I have all my backup tarballs & script files on /dev/hda3
PR> so I don't need the network for the install.

That is more or less what I do here. I think that is the ultimate.

PR> I'm not dead-ended yet, but I DON'T want to have to go through
PR> all this everytime I want to clone my Linux system! I want
 PR> something that WORKS!

Yep. I can relate to that. I like the hotswapping method the best.

Life is good,
Maurice
