Ärende: installing Linux with eCS

It uses normal partitions formatted with HPFS or JFS (journelling file system).
Never used the latter myself, but people say it's much more robust. At any
rate, it doesn't have to be installed on a primary partition, so there's no
real reason why the partition should be hidden unless someone decided to do
that and has something else installed on another active primary partition. It
also doesn't really require the OS/2 boot manager, and in fact I use it
without. It does require some boot code in the partition to start, but that can
be addressed by any kind of boot manager such as XFDISK or Lilo.

Partly force of habit, partly the stability compared to Windows and partly the
fact that it's relatively easy to make the transition to OS/2 from a
DOS/Windows base... no great changes in habits are required. In addition
there's a lot of fido software for it... in Germany, I would still guess that
the majority of fido systems are still OS/2 based, although Windows and Linux
are meanwhile gaining the upper hand.

Why so many primary partitions anyway? That certainly is a complex system.

If it _has_ to be Win95 (I wouldn't install that nowadays, and if anyone _has_
to have one of the oldies, then Win98SE), put it on a primary partition C:, run
DOS applications in a window or full-screen there, install the OS/2 (Warp
3.0??? Similar comment as with Win95 - here I wouldn't install anything less
than Warp 4, dirt cheap at Ebay) on a secondary partition without the boot
manager (and use either the XFDISK boot manager or Lilo to boot), and then
Linux on other secondary partitions.

Cheers, Bob
