[RE: Dell PowerEdge 4300 -> Trailer]
 JB> I smartened up. <G>
MK> I plan to do that here too.

And then I reverted back. (-;

One of the big Dells; I plan to plug in, in the trailer. Slack
will definitely be a candidate for that one. The overhead projector, and
ax-hot' panel are there already.

Lots to do, lots to do... Wish me luck?
<G+try not to make eye contact with Murphy>

PS: Projector and panel worked, and two Powedge's have come back to life.
Not much of a light show, but I was getting DC shocks quite a
bit. O-8=

 [RE: Dell Precision 210 -BIOS]
JB> I found out it was one of two Dells here, *without* onboard
SCSI.
MK> Weird. Perhaps a bootup menu? I see that on P4 based
MK> boards these days and it actually seems to work, amazingly
 MK> enough.

No, no... That one has no SCSI.. The PowerEdge line here, all
have built-ins. It was one of those
that was balking at my Slack attempts, but the two Precision
210s, have no SCSI built in. Either
way I've only seen two pages of setup in a Dell BIOS, and a
second option at startup if the
machine came *with* onboard SCSI. (If you can call a SCSI probe,
a page.)

PS: The SCSI page on the big guys did seem adequate, but I'm
still working on the hot-swap SCSI channel. A neighbour's 17yo
was bashing away with me yesterday on one. He was pretty good
with troubleshooting, too! He was less experienced on than I on
SCSI, but every one of his suggestions were valid.

[Differential frame record]
Say, do you now of a USB camera capture system for Linux, that
starts recording when there is
movement inframe? My thinking is, to compare frames from a USB or
capture card, to the next
frame, and record only when there are changes.

[RE: Cardinal MVP bla-bla-bla]
MK> PCI? I have yet to see a PCI based one that is worth any
MK> bother. I think those were all built with Win98 in mind
MK> (ie totally useless as configurable hardware).

ISA-PnP of all things. It's not a controller-less modem, but I
believe it uses system memory for
its fifo, or something along those lines. I saw a page or two,
where someone convinced it to work
with Linux, but I guess I didn't save it for perusal, and I
haven't gotten back to
researching it again.

I'm thinking of leaving it in the AP400, where it is my version
of a message answering machine.
In order to avoid getty, (and all the dance steps I'd need to get
there) I think Ill leave it in W2K
until it dies.

[RE: Slack SCSI -> Dell PowerEdge 2450]
JB> I'm assuming for the time, the 4, SCSI supplied kernels
weren't
JB> passing the mustard. I'm going to go with a plane Jane
 JB> do-everything kernel, next time.

MK> Not true. SCSI works fine the last time I checked it is
MK> just that it isn't always turned on in supplied kernels.
 MK> Often it is modular.

Yet, installing Slack seemed fine on all, but when it came time
to reboot, I received a kernel
panic regardless of which of the four SCSI kernels I went with.
My next shot is go with one of
the basic kernels, but I may need to turn on a controller module,
via a lilo switch?

[RE: Compaq AP400]
 JB> The AP400 series
JB> seems to be geared to the financial job force, or someone
that
JB> has to assemble a lot of boardroom presentations.
MK> In other words totally useless?

No, totally *quite!* Like buying a abeater,' you have to expect
the appropriate things from
the device.

JB> vid card option, where you can run 4 heads on one PCI card,

MK> Did it come with it? If so and it's a Matrox that would be
MK> worth liberating from that machine.

No, I just read about Compaq OEM option in the manual. "You can
instal *our* card, for four-
thousand dollars..." or something like that. B-]

[RE: USR Sportster - Confusion]
JB> No... Internal. I'll put money on it, that the flash ROM was
JB> scrambled. "ATI<#s>" showed some pretty bizarre output.
MK> Might be the Compaq itself.
Nope, it can't. It is in a generic machine.

 MK> Scrap it?
When the time is ripe. <-:
