[RE: 2U rackmount] (AKA: What is it good for?}
MK> I like rackmounts but can't say much for anything less then
MK> 4U. The 4U ones seem perfect and have never understood the
MK> attraction to thinner ones although that seems to be the
 MK> trend for whatever reason.

Ya... There are sacrifices with the slim stuff. This 2U Dell has only two PCI
slots, (IIR) a built in
vid/NIC, and not even an AGP slot. As deep as a day is long, but built to do
SCSI, and house a
T1 card or two. That's it. "If you want more, check our catalogue." (-;

[RE: Misdirected Idiots]
MK> Reminds me of expensive surveying equipment that tends to
MK> go missing until whoever realizes that it is only worth
MK> that much to the people who know what for and how to use
MK> it. I know some stories around that sort of stuff.

And after they pick up the transom, they realize there is NO market for it, and
their tax dollars go
to buying the city a new one... What are you gonna do with that brain trust?

[RE: Dell BIOSes <?>]
JB> You can call it anything you want, but the Dell looks like a
 JB> no-go too.

MK> I find that hard to believe but you probably know more
MK> about that then I do. I've never seen one in action.

I do have a tendency to forget what on earth I was talking about, so maybe the
two of us started
talking about other things, and someone lost track somewhere. (Most likely me.)
On a Dell run,
Slack would only work on the one *without* a built in SCSI. Now, maybe
something other froze
on it, and I'm suspecting the wrong thing. I only took a scratch note at the
time to try to fix it, and
attempted to install various kernels, but the real troubleshooting efforts will
start when I plug that
one back in.

Come to think, maybe Slack wasn't sticking to this Compaq (Also an onboard
SCSI.) either, but
with the chores it is relegated to, it'll do as is.

[RE: To PnP, or *not* to PnP.] (AKA: Here's what you get. You WILL like it.
AKA: Bend over)
It's the oddest thing. Even the old Compaqs - EISA bussed - were fantastic with
their setup
program.

[RE: MK> Two things; nothing and FA. :-)]
Na... Too busy. <L>

I just finished unloading another four palets of tile. MANG are those heavy!

 JB> over stuff.
 MK> Right. Good plan methinks.

Stuff and money were meant to be used. I just have to find where I hid my
stuff.

[RE: AMD <- ATI]
MK> nforce chipsets in the future. Also noted that AMD bought
MK> out ATI the day before yesterday so I imagine it'll be a
MK> rough ride for whoever makes nvidia in the near future.
MK> Whoever is contracting them better have deep pockets since
MK> I doubt they'll be supported much by anyone else for much
MK> longer. I won't be missing them any.

I heard the same, on the same "wrt" (Chuckle) ATI. I don't think their
manufacturing capacity
was lacking. They were the ones, more open with their Linux drivers, weren't
they?

Either way, they'll either get better, or worse. [-:

MK> Keeping it simple (delimited text) is a really good idea.
MK> I've been successful with all sorts of serial devices doing
 MK> exactly that.

Undoubtedly, the devices will dictate the format of the fields + records, but
unless it uses some
archaic scrambling/compression, I doubt there should be any troubles.

JB> cart, to charge up 60V of gel cells in it. What a noise that
 JB> thing makes when there's no O2 pressure. <L>

MK> That sounds really interesting. I need to get back to
MK> doing stuff like that. Beats me why I haven't been since I
MK> think it is important and appears to be getting more
 MK> important lately.

A learning experience to be sure. I even house bails of CO2 scrubbers. Now I'll
have to build a
submarine. (Wonder if Tom is lurking? B-) I surely harvested enough plumbing!
