RE: Linus humor

 MK> "linux bios" ought to be enough.  Just a sec ... yep!  First hit;

MK> Welcome to LinuxBIOS - LinuxBIOS

MK> It used to take me a couple days but lately I have that trimmed down to

Most of my days consist of hours.
I was speaking of the good days not a typical one.
Speaking of wiping the hard drive...
I wiped it out.
Trying to do more than I physically can standing wobbling all over
the place I lashed in a second physical hard drive, had a senior moment
leaving the machine plugged in as my hand struck the power on switch.
IDE cable half on I appear to have lost my MBR or perhaps just
the bootloader and have no way to boot to Debian on /hda3
Cheese und crackers, such a mistake I make <g>

Oh well, you win lose you some some ;-)

No big deal really.
So I just donned my Linux supersuit and reconfigured Slackware
which was still there on hda1.
No boot disk for Debian I can't get there yet but that's minor.

Couple of minutes.
I wonder if it'll successfully put a bootloader into the first
partition rather than the now appearently damaged MBR?

An entertainment for l8r.

Imagine my revulsion and dismay when upon invoking MultiMail it came
up with mcedit as the editor.

Rather suddenly corrected by substituting vi.
Man those garish colors first thing in the morning!

Mr. McBrine actually made a change to Multimail at my suggestion
back when I was attending Abilities.
Also I brought a MultiMail bug to his attention quicky
corrected.

WC> Actually a good deal less time since last nights backup.

Walk in the park :-)
I should have mine back soon too :-)
Drat the lack of iptables in Slack 10.2 however :-(

WC> I never went beyond 3.1 either except for the H.P. dumped on my
 WC> doorstep dead
WC> by someone disgusted with problems and the need to upgrade.

MK> Heh, heh. I like when that happens.

RE: profusion of compressed file utilities

MK> I forgot to mention bzgrep and zgrep.

Whoa, whoa, whoa Maurice, let's slow it down a bit.
While I'm having quite a good day let's not hit me with too
much at once.

WC> Best Buy has a Western Digital 80 Gig HD for 61 dollars today no
 WC> rebate.

MK> Sounds good. Seems it wan't that long ago that 40G cost ~$150.

I may buy another, or not.
Who the heck needs an MBR anyway?
What a really good time to investigate hexidecimal editing :

WC> Glad you brought that up, snip the rest and reply if USB 1 and 1.1
 WC> are hot swapable.

MK> Should be. It has been here (1.1) for some time now.

I think I've fried enough hard drives for one day thanks,
I'll leave that smoke test to another day thankyou.

WC> I've all the Gateway docs local in HTML as Gateways support has it
 WC> all on web
WC> site retreivable with serial number.
WC> Quite detailed and extensive too.

MK> I saw that. Seems to me they had ftp working last time I was there but
MK> I might be thinking of something else. They did have backup docs going
 MK> back some time.
MK> Gotta love when that happens.

I do, I do.
I'm thinking of sending them a love letter pronouncing my undying and
unconditional love.

WC> I sort of question it also however the one boot option reads
WC> "removable device" rather than floppy thus I'm thinking
 WC> it just may fly.

 MK> Should work.

Cool runnings.
I believe I could use a boot device about now.

WC> The BIOS release on it is the last for the box after it shipped
WC> as the numbers match to the flash upgrades docs I downloaded from
 WC> Gateway.

MK> I doubt usb bootabilty on there even if the bios says it's possible.
MK> That capability has been a more recent occurance. This Intel S775
MK> board is the only one I currently have that can boot anything I throw
MK> at it on usb. The Gigabyte AM2 board also worked 100% in that regard.
MK> One of the neighbour's S478 boards can also boot usb but with flash
MK> disks it requires a phoney-baloney DOS style floppy boot. I hate when
 MK> that happens.

WC> Finally ready to play around with su.

MK> I hardly ever use it anymore.

Well haven't yet, few trivial matters to attend to first.
Gads if this were Windows I were using this would be an unmitigated
disaster.
Know what I mean?

WC> Before judged it too easy to mess up but now a nice shortcut.

MK> Right. I just login on another console as root whenever I need to.

Hey, I was there a moment or two this morning.
You know what with the timing of that hardware screwup
obtaining that USB 2.0 case was providential.

MK> Still haven't got a GUI going where su is more meaningful. Maybe this
MK> time I'll give xorg-7.1 another shot. Last time I even went as far as

GUI?
Guess I don't even really know what su is.
Oh well. add that to the list of 99,000 other Linuxie
things to learn about.

MK> putting on a window manager although I still didn't fire it up that
MK> much once I saw that it worked.
MK> The xmga driver with mplayer sure looked spiffy on there. :-)

Configuring Slackware this morning finishing up in the time it
took to down half a cup of coffee I happened across
a couple of leaner GUI desktops.
Their names just evaporated from recall however on the whole a good
deal more processing capacity has come online this morning
then has been typical as of late.

Wow, really good day.
2-3 minutes and I've gotten rid of all the Cyan, Magenta
and Blue in the OLR making it far easier on the eyes.

Now I see the OLR reader configured properly with decent colors
and vi as editor it's a heck of a lot easier on the eyes and nerves.
It was way too DOS looking before.
DOS, gack!

You try to have a good day too Maurice OK?
