 A couple of months ago, we were impressed by Seagate's affordable 300GB
eSATA drive. In the realm of external storage, eSATA performance is king. It
stomps on similarly priced NAS, USB, and FireWire solutions, but your eSATA
choices are still rather limited. For storing colossal amounts of
high-definition or raw digital video, the benefits of speedy eSATA throughput
are even more pronounced. If you've ever thought about backing up your DVD
collection or HD content from your HTPC onto an external storage box, but were
daunted by price or performance considerations, Norco claims to have the
solution. Their DS-1220 eSATA storage box supports up to twelve SATA drives and
RAID0/1/5/0+1/JBOD. The kicker? It costs only $840. Let's take a closer look at
this box to see if it's right for you

 Norco's 3U rackmount storage box stands just less than 6 inches tall on its
own rubber padded feet sans rack. At 19 inches wide by 18.5 inches deep, it
weighs a good 33 lbs. without any drives installed. The DS-1220's 1.2mm steel
casing is durable and provides rugged protection for up to twelve SATA drives.
All twelve hot-swappable drive bays are numbered on the front of the case and
report their status with two LEDs. A green LED on each sled indicates power and
a yellow LED just beneath it reports disk activity. Fully loaded with 750GB
hard drives, the DS-1220 houses 9TB of raw storage.

There are very few products out there that offer what the Norco DS-1220 does
for just $840. Load it up with a dozen 500GB Western Digital (WD5000YS) drives
at $180 each and you've got a 6TB RAID box for $3000. From a price/performance
standpoint, that's an exceptional value. If you can find a hot-swappable twelve
drive RAID box at the same price point that supports 3Gb/s SATA performance and
RAID 0/1/5/0+1/JBOD we'd love to hear about it.
