Hey Russell!

Yes but my motto is 'use it or lose it' so by the time he realizes it is just
collecting dust there it probably will be too late to be of any benefit to
anyone, including himself. Can't live in a bubble forever without somebody
taking care of business.

My point is I doubt filling it up to the max will actually be an improvement
and in fact might be detrimental to your cause, whatever your cause is.
Everytime I have checked wrt 486's it seems that 32M total yeilds the best
performance all things considered no matter what and how I boot on them. So
far on the one running here 64M total is overkill and I am booting up a bloated
linux system off a 40G ide drive!!! Unreal. Works fine which amazes me.
Fully bloated perl-5.8.8 too.

That is all going to change soon. A customized ttylinux, more then likely an
8M ramdisk although it could easily be 4M. However 8M gives me room to
experiment which at this stage of the game looks to me to be the prudent thing
to do.

RT> Well I figure the acer 486DX4-100 could handle 128M, but I am in need
 RT> of 64M,

Sounds very reasonable. Is that an AMD or Cyrix? I don't recall Intel ever
making one of those.

RT> so if I can get 4x16M SIMMS, (what I forgot, and which got legs

RT> then I can make it ... , the back plane might do 64M, I am not sure,
 RT> but 32M
 RT> might just do ...

It will. Slackware will behave itself on that for sure. 64M might not be a
bad idea though but I don't know for sure. 32M will work fine. Up to you bud.

Speaking of perl, I just did up an ImageMagick for the 64-bit machine, no X,
and it successfully installed the included perl module for it. Specs? How is
this?

I am not sure about some of the no's up there but I think some of them require
gtk which I don't have. I have yet to actually use the results but the last
time I checked the perl module was exactly what was needed for X apps,
especially mplayer wrt the xmga driver. I actually had some fun with that
concept but at the moment don't have X done up for this machine. Too busy
distracted getting the 486 modernized and am using the Pentium D EM64T to take
care of development for it. At the moment I am not worried about GUI apps as I
seldom use GUI apps. I definetly don't need them but they can be fun at times.

Life is good,
Maurice
