===================
Hi, George! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

AH> I guess if I really wanted to brag I could describe
AH> Sunny Hill as a exclusive boarding school, rather
AH> than as a rehab centre... [chuckle].

GP> Wouldn't work for me, if you named it, as I am
GP> familiar with Sunny Hill & their role/purpose. . .

          I figured.... :-))

GP> we had a certain quirkiness to us and our meetings
GP> (including freely self-referencing as "gimps", to
GP> test out the newbies' sense of humour and self-
GP> importance! *G*)

Yes, that's pretty much how I've heard the word used too. Some folks
may find it a bit of a culture shock at first. But as with various slang terms
referring to ethnic origin, for example, the interpretation depends on who says
it & how they do it. I see how it could be helpful if you want to find out who
is willing to call a spade a spade & engage in some self-deprecating humour, as
opposed to folks who can't identify with the group & quite possibly never will.
"Political correctness" is for those who don't pick up on such nuances.... :-)

GP> and having a couple beers at the meeting (many
GP> people would freak if stroke victims were seen
GP> DRINKING!!! *laughs*)

Heh. First of all, I don't see you or Nora or anyone else I know who
has had a stroke as a "victim". You had a setback & you got on with your life.
That's what SURVIVORS *do*. A word like "victim" might be appropriate in cases
where there is also a "perpetrator", but in this case there isn't. It seems to
me the words "victim" and "suffering" are often used by the media in an attempt
to elicit the "Oh-you-poor-thing!" type of reaction (along with some voyeurism,
I guess). As Nora says, though, "I'm not a thing & I'm not poor".... ;-)

Second, it's been known for some time that people who use alcohol *in
moderation* are at *less* risk for strokes & heart attacks than teetotallers or
people who drink too much. The experts don't quite agree on what moderation is
or on what advantages one particular beverage confers over another... but there
may be people in your life who think they know what you "should" do. If you've
really done your homework, you'll know how to consider the source... (sigh).

GP> Not even sure if it's still operating -- you could
GP> contact the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation to ask them
GP> . . . :)

Right. I may just do that.... :-)

GP> You're very right about the typical stroke recovery
GP> clubs -- a bunch of 65-80 year olds sitting around
GP> singing songs from 70 years ago and doing lamoid
GP> exercises! (and a fun activity would be LAWN
GP> BOWLING!!) (blech!)

Although I wasn't thinking of recovery clubs in particular when I was
grumbling about other people's idea of "age-appropriateness", that is the other
side of the coin. As usual, we fall between the cracks.

Nora gets along quite well with the 65+ crowd, on an occasional basis
... but a steady diet of that sort of thing wouldn't appeal to her. And at the
other end of the spectrum, there are summer camps for kids with disabilities...
provided they're no older than eighteen! There's not much for anyone whose age
is between these extremes. We're gradually finding more information about what
*is* available, however, e.g. the adapted kayaking I mentioned earlier. If you
don't reside within the city limits it doesn't matter very much, BTW. A number
of the regular participants live on Vancouver Island or in the Fraser Valley...
the main problem, for some of us at least, is transporting the wheelchair. :-)
