Ärende: In and Out... 1.
=========================
Hi, James! Recently you wrote in a message to Ardith Hinton:

AH> When Dallas & I use brainstorming we tend to do it
AH> at a more leisurely pace.... :-)

JB> And that's what works for you, and you know it. "To
JB> thyn own self be true." Isn't that a famous quote?

I recognized it, anyway! HAMLET, Act I scene 3...

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

And no, I didn't memorize all that. I googled it. You don't have to
know everything if you know where to look it up. The names of the countries in
Africa which I memorized in elementary school, for example, are mostly obsolete
now. But (as I used to tell my students) I'm still using the research skills I
acquired while I was learning to find my way around an atlas & whatnot.... :-)

JB> I have really been examining my sources lately, and
JB> some of their info turned out to be contradicted.
JB> Now, before I open my mouth, I take a pause to try
JB> and recall where the info came from.

Yes, that's an important research skill too.... :-)

JB> I used to take the word of certain TV broadcasters
JB> as gospel, as today, after seeing contradiction on
JB> the same channel, tends to dilute my trust in the
JB> distributer en mass.

Uh-huh. Another example... I saw an article in READER'S DIGEST years
ago called "Are You Building Up a Sleep Debt?" The author claimed the majority
of adults don't get enough sleep. But then the fitness craze gathered momentum
... and the same magazine published an article about how the majority of adults
waste too much time sleeping! According to Article #2 we should get up earlier
in order to accomplish something useful like going jogging. While such lack of
consistency may disturb you & me, it seems to go generally unnoticed... (sigh).

JB> A sisters early BF talked to me aside one day when I
JB> was an early teen. I guess he saw I was torn between
JB> trying to conform, or strike my own path.

I felt much the same way at that age. I got an anonymous letter from
an older teen a few years later, but by then I'd already made up my mind. :-))

JB> I know now that it can be immense fun giving one
JB> impression, and turning the coin over when it is
JB> least expected. It doesn't always make life easier,
JB> but certainly more interesting.

I can relate. More about that in another message.... :-)

JB> Well, there's that little know phenomenon, called
JB> dynamics. I'm not really sure what it is, but if I
JB> ever figure it out, how about you being the first -
JB> well, outside my immediate influence - I'll give
JB> the skinny? <G>

I'd be honoured! Maybe what you're thinking of here is "counterwill"
... a theory explained in the works of Dr. Gordon Neufeld. I advise people not
to try outstubborning Nora, for example, because they will probably lose. They
assure me they wouldn't do anything of the sort. Then they try it, and realize
what I meant. Not everybody needs to be told. But the bottom line is that the
more you dig in your heels the more likely other folks are to do the same. :-)

JB> the very project I left my number with, is putting
JB> out feelers for volunteers. (sic. In a GOOD way!)

They help you, you help them. Sounds good to me.... :-)
