Ärende: Second Thoughts... 4.
==============================
Hi yet again, James! This is the last installment of the current series:

JB> I don't mean to rain on a parade here, and your
JB> information was better than instructional in
JB> getting your point across.

          Thankyou.... :-)

JB> I guess after being on the other side of the bench,
JB> I can better understand their 'incomplete' processes.

Yup. As a teacher & as a parent, I've also been on both sides of the
desk. The teacher has to consider the needs of many kids & recognizes that the
whole school can't be organized around Mrs. Jones's little Billy. The parent's
job, however, is to ensure the school is meeting the needs of *their* kid(s)...
and although I'd rather work co-operatively with the school, I'm prepared to go
into Mother Bear Mode if necessary. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.... ;-)

JB> I had to strap a box onto the "headache rack", and
JB> sure enough, after I had cinched it down to the rain
JB> channels, the noise came back. Until then, I was
JB> baffled, and I have worked on millions of dollars worth
JB> of equipment, and a lot of that was to do with mechanics.

Sympathetic vibration... the same effect you get when you use another
percussion instrument & your snare drum rattles! You recognized it because you
are a musician. The average mechanic might easily miss the connection, however
... which brings me to another point. We've used the same mechanic for umpteen
years now. One of the reasons is that when Dallas says the differential [e.g.]
is making a strange noise & he wants it looked at, this guy pays attention. He
respects the musician's ear even if he can't hear anything out of the ordinary.
The concept that "You know about xxx, I know about yyy, so we can put our heads
together" is lost on many people. But that's how Dallas & I like to work. :-)

JB> Now, I'll give it to you, that the mechanic should
JB> have shut his mouth long enough to hear your story

We have two eyes, two ears, and one mouth for a reason.... ;-)

JB> and the appliance guys/gals should likely posses
JB> enough experience that a cloths dryer isn't designed
JB> to work for an eight hour day without a load in it

It seems obvious to me, but maybe it's not so obvious to others. One
of the problems with being intuitive is distinguishing what's obvious to others
& what isn't. I offer one idea & they say "Duh, everybody knows that!" I keep
quiet about another, thinking they already know, and find they don't... (sigh).

JB> It *is* too bad really, that a person can get so
JB> muddled up in a job that is so against their type,
JB> but I guess there's always one in a crowd.

Yes, I suppose some people haven't quite found their niche yet. They
may also have had unrealistic ideas about what the job entailed at first. When
I was teaching grade eight English, for example, I saw the same spelling errors
so many times I almost began to doubt my own ability to spell. The GP may find
that 90% of his (or her) patients have ailments which were covered in 5% of the
course material. And when I worked in the men's grill at the golf club most of
my customers ordered a steak sandwich, ham & eggs, or bacon & eggs. Whatever a
person's job and/or level of formal education there may be various things which
seem pretty routine after awhile. But it's important to be aware that the next
thing may be completely different when you factor in the human element.... :-)

AH> Some of them probably just don't connect the dots,
AH> but one needs intuition to recognize that.... ;-)

JB> That's where it gets interesting, doesn't it? I mean
JB> the interpersonal dynamics are a lot easier to understand,
JB> and I'm just scratching the surface.

That's my take on it! And now you've got me scratching further below
the surface than I'd done before. Keep up the good work... [chuckle].
