Ärende: Dead, but not forgotten
===============================

>I like Patinkin and am glad that he's finding work elsewhere on TV. While
>he would be missed on a theoretical next season of DLM, his storyline did
>have some closure and a new "boss" could be easily introduced. The show
>did set precedent for reapers being able to move on. My guess would be
>that Roxy would become the new boss as she did act as major domo when needed.

Mandy was great as Rube, but I agree that he could easily move on with his
last reap a new recruit for the team. Yes, Roxy could easily step in for
Rube and would no doubt make Rube look like a pussycat by
comparison. While there remain many mysteries about the other reaper's
pasts, a new recruit would add new intrigue to the mix. But if the series
does end at season two, its final episode left it at a reasonably good
place. In the final cemetery scene Georges narrative switched from the
usual past tense to present tense and ended on a positive note with her
realization that "It's not so bad, being dead like me."

>It was great to see the diner again. And, it was encouraging to see that
>the set hadn't been struck (I suppose it could have been rebuilt for this
>purpose.) Was this used simply as a production money saving device for
>SG1 or was it truly a shout out to DLM fans? Perhaps a letter campaign
>directed to Sci Fi thanking them for an episode that used this familiar
>set would help move a decision on DLM in the right direction.

I suspect that it was more a matter of convenience that an available set
was used, though Daniel did sit first in Rube's favorite booth and was
served waffles. The diner wasn't called "Der Waffle Haus," however, and
didn't have the corny music in the background. One fan suggested that if
they wanted to make an acknowledgement of DLM they could have had O'Neil
wake up next to Daisy. OK, that would have been too corny.

I didn't see it, but SG-1 used George's old room in another episode,
"Citizen Joe," which would support the idea of economizing with existing sets.

>(Yes, I know it wasn't a Sci Fi decision.) But, in all honesty, DLM isn't
>a great fit for Sci Fi's schedule and direction. It would fit more neatly
>on USA, who could use another series to fill in times when there are no
>new episodes of Monk and Dead Zone.

It isn't a good fit, but SciFi has run other shows that were well outside
the science fiction theme. They are apparently looking for a lead-in show
for a new blockbuster-lineup night like the did with Friday. They would
keep the two Stargates together on Friday and move Battlestar Galactaca to
another night. Rumor was that DLM was being considered as a lead-in for BSG.

MGM has shopped DLM around to a number of networks, and USA was probably
one of them. WB and A&E were a couple others. WB reportedly turned them
down, and I'd guess that A&E will do the same after the failure of their
"Family Plots" reality series. They'd see DLM as just another "dead" show.

I noticed an interesting coincidence with Jewel Staite who played Kaylee in
FIREFLY. She appeared in DLM's first season finale as the goth girl who
made it with Mason in the record shop closet. She was also in WONDERFALLS
playing Eric's unfaithful wife, Heidi. Jewel seems to have had a streak of
bad luck appearing in short run series. She was also in the pilot of
Showtime's horrendously hyped Huff series. That series was renewed for the
second season before the first one aired, but will it be cursed as well?

>The diner looks remarkably like the "Dynasty" Chinese restaurant I
>frequent on a regular basis. Good food but no waffles...

I wonder if it was a set they built up, or did they find an existing
property? Old chain restaurants get reused as one-of-a-kinders quite often.
