While the first-time connection can download hundreds of headers, more of
an issue (for me, at least) is that I may only use this laptop every two
weeks or so... it's not a serious problem, since even if I download 500
headers, I only need to look at the ones from the past 24 hrs or so.

While I'm happily using webmail, web-based calendar and address book (etc)
 in order to keep everything up to date and accessible regardless of what
 computer I'm using, in that regard NNTP: has been a step backwards.
