Here is my Two Cents worth...

I ran Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 1 thru
Service Pack 6a on an AMD K6-2 500 with 256 Meg of Ram
and two 6 Gig HD's, this setup ran smoothly for
5 years or more after Service Pack 4 was installed..

So why did I need to upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro?

But throwing caution to the wind..

I Installed Win2k Pro and after about two hours
everything was running smoothly, very few hickups
durring the install..

But my luck with Win2k was not to last for long..

within 2 weeks the system gradully slowed down
to a crawl, and eventually failed to bootup

after much head scratching, hair loss, lots of Coffee
and 7 or eight reinstalls, RegClean, Optimization etc..

every time Win2k would curl up it toe's and die within
two weeks..

I eventeally Re-installed my WinNT 4 SPk 6a from a Cloned
HD Backup and NT ran Smoothly for another year without
a hickup..

After extensive Research about Win2k and AMD-K6-2 500,
I discovered that there was a Timimg conflick in Win2k
that needed a faster CPU, and my Bios was so old that
AMD no longer provided upgraded to my chip..

As Luck would have it..
I purchased a New T2385 eMachine 2.30GHz 512Mb,
80 Gb HD with WindowsXP Home and have had no problems
with WinXP..

So perhaps your Computer is to Small, old or to Slow
to run Win2k efectively??
