RH> I've taken some time off to finish January Term work. Don't be
RH> surprised if this (and other messages) don't get posted for another
RH> day or so. I've got to finish a journal, then edit it before
RH> submitting it later this week. Second semester starts on Thursday with
RH> an evening class for both of us.

Not to worry... I'm periodically taking a day or two off from answering
just because the brain doesn't want to compute well enough to say
anything intelligible... (G) So, a delay here or there isn't noticed
too much... ;)

NB>> Thought so... Spoils the joke, but people with cacti in their front
NB>> yards in Phoenix have to water them when it doesn't rain, or they look
NB>> very sick. I guess they don't have the root systems, nor the access
NB>> to deep water that the "wild" desert ones have...

RH> Cactus do have very deep roots but it also take a long time to
RH> establish them. If the front yard sauguaro is one that was taken
RH> (illegally) from the desert, it has to re-establish a root system and
RH> will need lots of water. Did you know they don't start growing their
RH> arms until they are at least 75 years old?

I'd heard that, yes. :) When we were visiting our son out there, we
saw some setups that the poor cactus hadn't a chance of even developing
(or re-establishing) a proper deep root system...

NB>> but I do like the changing seasons, and it isn't nearly as cloudy as
NB>> people like to make it out to be, either. :) I figure that if the
NB>> sun peeks through even a little that it can't count as a day without
 NB>> sun. ;)

RH> We've had grey days that have been warm and sunny days that have been
RH> cold this winter. Another one of the latter is forecast for tomorrow.

The clouds can hold the warmth in closer to the ground... acting
somewhat as a greenhouse... Clear nights are especially notorious for
letting all the warmth get away... ;)

RH> The main reason I don't like cold is that it aggrivates my asthma. By
RH> the same token, hot humid days do also.

True. You can't win either way...

NB>> When I was a kid, we lived for 4 years in Mississippi... in all that
NB>> time it snowed ONCE. Of course, everything shut down... (G) We had
NB>> to enjoy it while we could. ;)

RH> Yes, did you make snow ice cream then? Basically, fill a large bowl
RH> with clean snow, stir in some cream, sugar and vanilla until well
RH> mixed, then enjoy. The hard part is findng enough clean snow these
 RH> days.

I know how to do... but no, we didn't... we just rolled up all the snow
in our yard into 3 big balls... and then couldn't lift them onto each
other to make a snowman so just turned them into snow "chairs"... They
lasted for a couple of weeks, if I remember right... long after all the
rest of the snow was gone... :) I don't think we would have found
enough clean snow after we'd trampled all around in our initial glee
anyway... ;)

RH>> I hear you there. I still tire very easily; the oncologist said that's
RH>> something I'll always have to deal with from the radiation. If we had
RH>> days that were twice as long, would we have twice the number of meals
RH>> to cook/eat/clean up after? If so, I'd simplify my cooking for most of
RH>> them, having something that took more fuss only once every few days.
NB>> Good question... :) I suspect we might just nosh on smaller meals
NB>> right along. And would the nights also be twice as long, so that we
NB>> could rest these tired bodies of ours...? ;)

RH> Probably the nights would be about half again as long as they are now.
RH> There are some of us who get a lot of work done at night instead of
RH> the day; you know that nights now don't (usually) seem to be as long as
 RH> days.

I know a number of people who try to make the days longer by using a
large chunk of the night to try to function... If I work through the
night, I need to make the day my "night"... candles have a limited
number of cuts before they just melt without even burning... (G) (As
in, I cut my candle in two so I could burn it at 4 ends...)
