====================================================================
Hi Janis,

>> to do. It sounds stupid, but its because the connections in my brain
>> to do the simplest things have been eroded - sometimes axons are
>> totally destroyed, cut off.. I think of it like the patterning we read
>> about years and years ago... When I brought patterning up to her that
>> day, she agreed with me, her aim with me was very similar. That path
>> doesn't work anymore, we need to use this path to get there.

JK> > I see. and to train the brain you need to keep up the patterning (or
JK> > remapping) if I'm reading you right.

JK> Yes, my brain will hopefully do this. It should. There is some
JK> damage that can't be changed (so far at least), in my right leg. For
JK> that, if we need to, we'll use appliances. But I think if I work at
JK> it, I can force the issue (g)... seriously, when my right leg won't do
JK> some of the exercises, I have to put it where I want it, with my
JK> hand.. then once I feel where it's supposed to go, I can do the
JK> exercise. Kind of weird feeling but it works (g).

As long as it works for now. It may "get the signal" at some point. I
presume you have some sort of kitchen stool or chair for use when you
can't stand very long. I've got a stool but found that I can't get the
leveage I need for chopping/cutting when sitting down. So, it's up on
my feet & listen to the left foot fuss at me later on if I over do.

JK> > I had to learn how to walk again
JK> > after I tore up my right knee and was on crutches for 6 months.
JK> It's > amazing how fast the brain forgets things like that; it also
JK> remembers > new things quite well with enough re-enforcement.

 JK> Yes, very true.

So keep on with the exericises--get that brain retrained!

>> it's not that.. it's too easy. I told her, no, I don't want to just
>> give in and use that contraption, it's too easy. I want you to teach

JK> > It's also harder to do things like cooking with a walker since you
JK> have > to use it with both hands. They (walkers) aren't as easy as
JK> they look > to use as my dad found out. (G)

 JK> Heh that's true (g).. though once I'm in the kitchen, I'm ok. :)

Understood. I'm moving around so much that I'd probably find it more of
a hinderance, at least right now. Probably 30 years from now I'd find I
couldn't get by without it. (G)

JK> > with the dominant hand. What doesn't help is that it was the wrist
JK> that > broke worse and I had the elbow shatter so that arm is weaker.
 JK> Arund

JK> Ouch that does sound so so painful.. It must have been the pits when
 JK> it happened.

Yes, but it could have been much worse. I broke the same elbow (simple
fracture, same location) when I was 7 & the doctor told me if I ever
broke it again, nothing could be done to fix it properly. I broke it
worse 40 years later and technology made it possible to put it back
together, even tho it was a much worse break. Told the doctor at
Tripler (head of the orthopedic dept. at the time; he put the elbow back
together) what my family doctor had said. He repeated it so I kiddingly
asked about the devices like on Star Trek, TNG, that they waved over a
broken bone. Not available yet.

JK> > the house I generally don't use the cane so I'll stir the pot with
JK> > whichever hand is more comfortable. It also helps in chopping
JK> something > up to have both hands free. Let's hope the insurance
JK> company pulls thru > for you this week--they should have your doctor's
JK> nice little note by > now.

JK> Now a representative from the company that Ron works for, is also
JK> getting involved. She's the company's advocate so to speak.. she
JK> handles any problems the employees and their families may have with
JK> Aetna.. She called me today to let me know she's working on them, and
JK> we should have an answer very soon. Hopefully a good answer (g).

Let's hope so. Let them have it, with all barrels! (G)

>> her... she'd hand them off to me in a way that was sneaky (G). She
>> was just so appreciative of attention and care. I guess that's the
>> other side of what you were talking about :)

JK> > Sounds like it. I also sent goodies in with Steve for sharing at
JK> work > different times. One time I sent some chocolate chip cookies,
JK> turned > out the battalion commander liked oatmeal raisin better
JK> (everybody else > enjoyed the chocolate chip). So, the next goodies
 JK> were oatmeal raisin > cookies. (G)

JK> Yes, people love that (grin).. In KY, I used to send in pumpkin bread,
JK> peanut butter cookies, and raisin bread.

Gave me a chance to do some fun baking without eating all the calories.

 JK> ==Pumpkin bread==
 JK> 10" tube pan
 JK> Preheat oven to 350F

About like mine but I use a 5x9 loaf pan.
