In Nicholas's cellar I once encountered a Chardonnay from hot
central California. Nicholas had bought it before he was rich,
back in the '60s I guess, maybe early '70s: it was incredibly
cheap, just this side of wino wines. Fortunately, Nicholas
promptly became rich and forgot this stuff, until we found it
30-35 years later (way past for a Chardonnay except for the
greatest vintages of the greatest Burgundy crus). It was
excellent. High acidity and lots of glycerin had preserved it,
and though very different from what it had been bottled as,
and very different from any wine before or since, I think
Hugh Johnson or Robert Parker would have made it famous if
they tasted it. Later I looked up the winemaker - when he
made this, he was young and poor; later he achieved some
success and reputation; then a bust in the market, bankruptcy,
debtor's prison, and death, I'm sure only about several of
these. Not that I'd ever wish Burt any of them, of course.

I figure I'll eventually get something out of it. The
failures and inaccuracies are remarkable.

Yes and no. I have just enough (just) to do most of the things
I want to do. Otherwise, nothing for me. And relative to what I
said before, money begets Harvard; Harvard begets money. I am
not making any value judgment about either.
