We had power, running water and a real bathroom since I was 2 so I
don't remember not having them. Lot's of neighbours didn't though,
until later. I remember stopping at a guy's place for a drink after
deer hunting to bring him some meat. That was in 1967 and he still
lacked those things. He was an old bachelor, living alone, and
didn't see the need, after looking at the expense. Every winter he
kept a cot in the kitchen near the woodstove to reduce his heating
costs and so he could have coffee in bed every morning.

I did a replacement one when I was a teenager. Hard work!

 DD> then my male cousins and I got pressed back into service to "fill
 DD> things in" whilst the adult men went off to drink a beer or several.

When I worked hard with older men I got to drink with the men
afterward. On a prorated basis, based on my body weight. "I weigh
240 and you weigh 80; if I have three beers you can have one; if I
have six, you can have two."  Back then two gave me a major buzz,
especially if I was dehydrated and guzzled them.
