So my connection was destroyed by the weather, and they
put me in coach on a reroute, the second to last seat on
a delayed flight that would at least position me for
getting to Swisher's tonight. I'd passed up Five Guys
because there was lunch on my original plane, but alas.

A rather pouty-looking girl of 30-odd in the window; she'd
have been kind of cute but for the spoiled look. The window
guy was pretty jolly, a guy from the CDC; we chatted for a
while, something that wouldn't tend to happen in first
class, where every man is an island entire unto himself.
I slept a while, worked a while, stared at the wall a while.
No food offered, but I had a free cup of tea. There were
three drink services, pretty good for coach. The pouty girl
ordered a juice, so the FA handed me her napkin, which I
gave her, but she wouldn't take it, as I'd coughed a couple
times into my sleeve. When we landed and it was time to go,
the CDC doc rather pointedly shook my hand ... I guess showing
what he thinks about this fake sterility mania.

By the time I got here I was really, really hungry. I
Made a beeline for Anthony's, where the oysters rang in
at $2.16 apiece. Willapa Bays were kind of bland; Penn
Coves were briny, almost too much so, but with good
sweetness and marine flavor. They also fry up the Willapa
Bays in a fritter batter - I tried these, which were okay
($9 for half a dozen). No drinks, as booze is free at the
United (ex-Continental) Club, my next stop.

Jim Beam White (onboard, they serve the somewhat nicer
Black), but hey the price was right. I ordered a double,
but the bartender couldn't do that. I went to a workstation
and had just begun to savor my drink when there she was,
hovering with a second. So a de facto double. She got a tip.

Tillamook medium Cheddar is not unlike what they used to call
mild, or bland, or something. Not worth the pills.

This club doesn't have grapefruit juice, so I did a hot
instant chocolate tasting.

Nestle rich chocolate has almost no flavor, but a certain
richness that owes I think to fake marshmallow substance that
leaves a frothy residue in the cup. It's sort of fake vanilla
gelatinous with just a hint of cocoa. Medium sweet.

Ghirardelli double chocolate lives up to all its names, with
nice bitterness balancing the also medium sweetness. I'd spend
the pills on this any time.

On the next flight, which offers supper, the meal was billed
as pasta salad with cold chicken breast - yecch. I asked for a
Courvoisier instead. They were out, so I get to compare Jim
Beam White (club) and Black (on board).

White is 4 years old, slightly raw, grainy, a tad sweet. Slight
citrus and wood notes. It's not unpleasant and is one of my
everyday whiskeys (well, you know what I mean).

Black is 8 years old and equally raw. The sweetness is gone, as
is the fruitiness. What is left is a dark chocolaty woody
concoction that was much improved by an addition of 10% water.
Medicinal finish. As it turns out, it is 86 proof as opposed
to the white's 80 proof.

There was DirectTV on this flight: I hope nobody paid for it,
as a considerable portion of the route is over Canada, and
Continental pays for service only in the US. I'm on the plane
as I type now: it's also supposed to have GoGo, but it doesn't.
So upload tomorrow.

Update. I told the other FA, when she reported an acute lack of
Courvoisier on the aircraft, that she'd broken my heart. Halfway
through the flight, guess what came. From a secret stash back in
Coach, where they sell it for $7 per 50 ml snort - the equivalent
of $105 a bottle.
