Ärende: HAPPY NEW YEAR 1 21002
==============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to All <=-

ML> Wishing everyone a happy and safe new year's eve and 2012
 ML> (and beyond of course).

Likewise from here, after the hottest New Year's Day for over 100
years - 41.6C (107F).

ML> * Helen and her husband Steve are of that generation of New
ML> York Jews who love European culture despite what Europe did
ML> to their friends and relations in living memory; they have a
ML> nostalgia (as sometimes many of us do) for times and places
ML> where they never were, and if they had been, life would have
ML> been much harder than rosy hindsight shows. True, Viennese
ML> culture was one of the most splendid in history; but the
ML> Austrians, despite their Gemutlichkeit, are fundamentally
ML> one of the most bigoted and prejudiced people, distrusting
ML> everyone who isn't Austrian, except perhaps the Germans when

An interesting observation. I have had several very good Austrian
friends, and I agree that they have a tendency towards arrogance.
Austria is like Scotland in that it is a small country, but half the
population couldn't wait to leave it and go all over the world,
telling everyone how wonderful their homeland is. In some Austrians
this tendency makes them feel that they should rule the world, which
Adolf nearly did, while Arnold had to settle for what some consider to
be its most important part. Like Scots from Aberdeen, who claim that
their spoken English is superior to that spoken anywhere in England,
Austrians insist that German as spoken by them is much more correct
than what is spoken by those uncouth Germans. Years ago in PNG, an
Austrian friend once told me off for taking what she saw as an unfair
advantage of a mutual acquaintance, "After all, he is only a German!"

When travelling with my friends from Austrian Perschtoldsdorf to
Bratislava in Slovakia, Ingrid's attitude towards the natives there,
who she referred to as "Czechs", was that of amused disparagement.

ML> they roll into town in Panzers. An irony is that since WWII

My Scottish born friend, Ivor, who married Ingrid 37 years ago, still
lives in the 100 year old, 4 storey, family pile, but the painting of
his father-in-law in his "Heil Hitler" uniform has gone. The Russian
bullet holes in the walls remain, as does their samovar which they
left behind in the house when they left.

While Vienna is a rather cold show place, with beautiful buildings and
lots of Ooo-Ahh tourists, the inhabitants of smaller towns and
villages further out along the Danube are very friendly, showing more
of the old time hospitality. The capital city to countryside
relationship is rather like that of Paris to country France in that
respect. When leaving our hotel in Perschtoldsdorf, the owner
presented us with a bottle of the local wine to sustain us on our
journey to Prague. This has never happened to me anywhere else.
Tipping was not expected there.

ML> there was a huge influx of first Czechs and Hungarians and
ML> then progressively less light-colored peoples, and Vienna
ML> is becoming quite melting-pottish, leading to such backlash
ML> phenomena as Jorg Haider, and perhaps a backsliding return
ML> to the bad old days even as people try to reconstruct the
ML> good old days without its flaws.

Traditionally Vienna has been multi-cultural, welcoming artistic
people from all over Europe, and even Australia. In recent years
there have been more migrants from Roumania and Turkey, while almost
everywhere in Europe now there are North African street vendors, but
less so in Vienna than Rome or Naples. Vienna does depend on
tourists, so the grand buildings are kept polished and clean, and
brass bands perform in the square on Sunday mornings.

ML> ** probably Mozart and Beethoven. As Helen cleverly invited
ML> violinists, in all probability I will have to play viola -
ML> which is okay as I love the sound of it, but less okay as it
ML> is bigger, and the playing of it causes some physical pain.

Creative artists are expected to suffer for their art! You had better
imbibe some pleasant pain killer before the concert.

I had a quiet New Year's Eve, with just immediate family, then on New
Year's Day I was dragged off by a cousin of my Darwin son-in-law to
the Sikh Temple (a former Methodist church) for part of a 3 day prayer
reading. I lasted little over an hour, cross-legged on the floor,
before the pain level became too high, and I called it quits and went
home, unfortunately missing the lunch break. It took 2 young
gentlemen to get me up onto my feet, to toddle off into the 41 C
weather, and a half hour walk home.

      Title: Masala Bangun (Spicy Eggplant)
 Categories: Indian, Vegetables
      Yield: 4 Servings

      1 Green mango
      2 Onions
      3 cl Garlic
      4 Hot chillies
      2 Tomatoes
      2 ts Garam masala
      2 tb Butter
      1 ts Turmeric
      8 Small Asian eggplants

Peel and cut flesh from the stone of the green mango. Peel and crush
garlic. Peel and roughly chop the onions. Remove seeds from
chillies. Blend these ingredients and the tomatoes until coarsely
chopped and fry in some of the butter until fairly dry. Add garam
masala and turmeric and fry some more. Split the eggplants, rub the
cut surfaces with salt, and stuff with the onion/spice mixture and
tie with cotton. Fry in the remaining butter until eggplants are
cooked. Serve as a side dish with a meat dish and rice.
