We have had mixed success. I severely cut back the basil the first year
so it took a while for it to recover--but it did. The oregano was cut
back just as severely but came back quicker. We were outside today,
looking at the potential plot and figuring out what needs to be done.
Main thing right now is to wait a few more weeks until the weather warms
up more. It looks like, in addition to the parsley, oregano and
spearmint that are overwintering nicely, we can put in some tomato &
pepper plants, maybe some basil as well. There's room in the side bed
that has the rosemary, lavender and thyme to put something more in there
as well.

We know them on both sides, one a bit better than the other but I'm sure
both would be willing to look after the garden. I'm mostly concerned
about the tomatoes; if they're picked ripe (and there are a lot of
them), I want them skinned, seeded and frozen. That's asking too much
for a neighbor so I'd try to plan for them to ripen mostly after we got
back. Some could while we were gone for the neighbor to pick and enjoy
but I don't want them to be left with the caretaking during the high
part of the season.
