AH> I was seven or eight at the time. Unfortunately
AH> kids nowadays don't have such opportunities

AH> if I had to identify a single highlight of my
AH> childhood years, I'd report that as my most
 AH> wonderful experience.... :-)

About them not having similar opportunities, in one way, I know you're right.
On the other, I know how inventive we were. Our district was totally developed,
and I wasn't aware of any active sites inside a comfortable commuting distance.
Counterpoint to that, we didn't have to pack a lunch to reach an open meadow
either. We were to occupied running through storm drains, and torturing garder
snakes to pay it much mind.

About building sites being sequestered, with what we know about asbestos, and
the like...

AH> Yes, one of the things I like about
AH> kids & about seniors is that they are so
AH> transparent. The former haven't yet learned to
AH> throw up barriers... the latter either can't
AH> spare the energy, or no longer remember how. :-)

Enjoy the years while they are terrible liars, eh? We've a new ringleader two
doors away. I asked him if he was having a good day, or a bad day. When he said
it was a bad day, I asked him why. "My friends are idiots." I should have asked
about a few I know are pretty cool, to turn his frown upside down, but instead
his disarming statement set us both off laughing.

And his mom wonders why her house always has kids running through it.

AH> Agreed. At least a dozen
AH> characteristics have been identified which are
AH> present from birth & may have an influence on
AH> personality... general level of sensitivity, for
AH> example. And differences between learning styles
AH> begin to show up before the elementary school
AH> years. It may take some time to sort all these
AH> things out. I began to notice such differences
AH> as a kid... and I really noticed them as a
AH> teacher! But it wasn't until I'd read a book
AH> about learning styles that I was able to see how
AH> the various puzzle pieces fit together. :-)

That would be interesting, but I'm starting to wonder if my learnin' days might
be over. I'm going to try and do some upgrading, but I'm worried about the
physical commitment. I haven't been able to keep a weekly appointment with
myself, and just wonder how that will wash with a distance learning
institution. I guess I'll find out one way or another.

JB> Orson Wells said it best, when the `Martians' were
 JB> eaten by bacteria.

AH> Or viruses, maybe! Both can mutate

Yes, that's what I *meant* to say. <G>

AH> within a fairly short time... and seldom kill
AH> one host before taking up residence in another.
AH> Another idea along similar lines has to do with
AH> cockroaches. They can eat almost anything...
AH> they can survive extremes of heat & cold, as
AH> well as radiation... and they also hide in
 AH> obscure places. It's not impossible they'll
AH> outlive the human race.... :-/

The only real advantage I know to a virus, is their size. How they might react
to irradiation is beyond me, but I know they will fit through our best osmosis
filters FWI heard. I think bleach kills them though.

As far as insects, them and us hummans are the only two genus (Classification?
I think family of insects, and species of sapien.) to be growing in population.

AH> Well... with any tool, a lot depends
AH> on how it's used. I just wanted to get the job
AH> done & I imagine he might have been less
AH> receptive if he thought I was trying to one-up
AH> him. Again, some knowledge of reasoning styles
AH> comes in handy here. I couldn't identify it by
AH> name then... but I've seen similar lines of
AH> reasoning in academic circles where one may be
AH> expected to cite the opinions of various
AH> Authority Figures before expressing one's own.
AH> It makes sense, in a way, because many people
AH> hold opinions with little or no basis in fact.
AH> I find it frustrating, however, that a prophet
AH> hath no honour in his own country. ;-)

I can see the trouble in that. A qualifying statement couldn't hurt an
argument,
although it may not be retrievable until half way home, or if it turns out to
be the Sunday paper you are citing... I wrote a paper in HS, about emotions in
animals, and if they have them. I used a Penthouse article exclusively, so I
only got a B. The teacher liked my work, but said it would gain leverage, if I
used someting other than a smut rag. He was the same psychology teacher we
ditched out early on, to "Drive to the insurance office."

He says, "I didn't see any damage on your car, Brett. Isn't that your
Volkswagon?"

"No, I witnessed an accident." I thought that was as credible a save, as
teacher did, but we weren't fooling anybody!

 JB> Don't go anywhere, I'll be right back. <G>

 AH> Since I'm not a techie, I'm not sure
AH> what the problem is. Dallas & I have been here
AH> for 16 years, though, and we're not planning to
 AH> go away.... ;-)

I was likely just going into the backlog for new-old messages. If it helps your
`non-techie' head, just think of it like I'm pausing for a cause. I have no
idea what the cause may have been, but if it helps you any, I'll play along.

I toyed with the sysop here last summer in much the same way. Off the cuff, I
asked him to hold the mail for me, while I went on a holiday. I could tell he
was baffled, as it had been established that I wasn't a first time caller.
Still, his reply was as cute as yours just now. <chuckle>
